That we experience life as we know it is partially due to the evolution of biological membranes. They allowed to define an inner and outer part of cells and provided to protect life from a partly hostile environment. The so called plasma membrane surrounds cells and inside of each cell biological membranes confine regions of various functional properties. Areas as such are for example the endoplasmic reticulum, the Golgi apparatus or the mitochondria. The latter one is responsible for the energy production of biological cells, whereas the other ones are related to the synthesize and the distribution of important macromolecules called proteins.

Life would not have been possible without the evolution of biological membranes. They allowed to define an outer and inner and protected life from a partially hostile environment. The plasma membrane surrounds cells, whereas in cells again biological membranes define different regions such as the Golgi apparatus, the endoplasmatic reticulum and the mitochondria. These areas are responsible for important functions such as the delivery of macromolecules of amino acids (proteins), the synthesis of these or providing the energy production of cells.

This is the story of Albert. He is not real, but has relations to persons we know. He is supposed to tell you about the experiences you make as a young researcher who has his dreams. Follow him on his further development. Learn how he feels and get to know his ordinary working day in the lab, at his desk, in discussions, at conferences and so on. You will hopefully enjoy. Your comments and discussions are highly appreciated.
